BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
Wednesday, April 17, 2019
WELCOME AND CALL TO ORDER
The Southside Virginia SHRM Board of Directors met on Wednesday, April 17, at Averett University’s Riverview Campus in the first floor conference room.
The meeting was called to order at 12:05 p.m. by Angie McAdams, president. The following members were present at the meeting:

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
First Quarter Report: The quarterly report was submitted on March 22.
State Conference: Angie McAdams reported that the state conference was an enjoyable and educational event. There were great speakers and over 620 individuals attended the conference. She also recruited Regina Hairston as a new member. Regina is employed by JM Huber.
Membership Advisory Council (MAC) Survey: Members were encouraged to complete the MAC survey which will be sent out via email. The deadline for completing the survey is Friday, April 26.
SHRM Initiative – Getting Talent Back to Work Pledge: This initiative promotes support for removing hiring barriers for individuals who have been formerly incarcerated. Board members discussed the barriers to employment and company hiring policies as they relate to ex-offenders. Chad Younger made a motion for SSVSHRM to support this initiative, and Vicki Davis seconded the motion. The motion passed with 9 members voting yes and 1 member opposed.
PRESIDENT-ELECT’S REPORT
Chaquetta Hill was not able to attend the meeting.
TREASURERS’ REPORT
Glenda Holt provided each board member with a copy of the Financial Reports for the month of March.
SECRETARIES’ REPORT
Members were provided with copies of the minutes for the March Board Meeting and the regular monthly meeting. Janice Brink made a motion to approve the minutes as presented and Cathy Conner seconded the motion.
MEMBERSHIP REPORT
Lucius Chandler reported that there were 54 paid members. There were also four applications received without payment. Members briefly discussed the possibility of retirees continuing their memberships. Jill Levinson stated that some chapters allow free memberships for past presidents and board members.
PROGRAM REPORT
Speakers: The following individuals were suggested as speakers for future meetings:
- May – R. J. Lackey, Attorney (information needed by next Wednesday, April 24, for certification credits
- August – Dr. Robert Walker, VEC Chief Veterans Office (originally scheduled for November)
- November – Curtis Artis (Getting Talent Back to Work Initiative)
- September - Kristina Barkhouser (motivational speech)
Administrative Professionals’ Day Update:
- The umbrellas (100) have been delivered
- Cathy Conner will contact Betty Wilcher for count on number who have registered
- Individuals who have not paid will be able to pay by check on the day of the event
- Angie McAdams will send a reminder email to members to bring door prizes for guests
- Jan Brink and Cathy Conner will arrive between 11 and 11:30 to check-in non-members
- Lucius Chandler and Michele will arrive by 11 a.m. to check-in members
- Cathy Conner will introduce the speaker, Dr. Martha Walker
- Angie McAdams will purchase gift card for Dr. Walker and take it to Janice Brink
- Vicki Davis will handle the 50/50 drawing
- Cathy Conner will purchase candy to place on the tables
CERTIFICATIONS REPORT
Betty Wilcher was unable to attend the meeting.
COMMUNICATION REPORT
Twyla Price and Connie Alderson were not able to attend the meeting.
FOUNDATION REPORT
Vicki Davis provided ideas for various fundraising events for the chapter. She reported that the breakfast/dinner fundraiser is no longer being considered. She suggested that group members sell raffle tickets for cash prizes. Winners will receive 50% of the amount of ticket sales. Vicki made a motion to have a 50/50 cash raffle and the motion was seconded by Cathy Conner. All members voted in favor of the motion.
WORKFORCE READINESS REPORT
Chad Younger reported that 11 responses have been received from the employer survey that was sent to members. Chad will request Connie to resend the survey to possibly solicit additional responses.
COLLEGE RELATIONS REPORT
Jill Levinson revisited the idea of offering a membership scholarship to a college student. Jill made a motion to offer a scholarship to Marcellous Reeves who is working as an intern in the HR department at Danville Public Schools. The motion was seconded by Cathy Conner and all members present voted in favor of the motion. Jill will notify Marcellous of the scholarship.
PAST PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Ronnie Pannell was not able to attend the meeting.
