April Chapter Meeting Notes
SOUTHSIDE VIRGINIA SHRM
REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING
Wednesday, April 24, 2019
WELCOME AND CALL TO ORDER
The Southside Virginia SHRM chapter met for its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 24, at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) in the first floor conference room.
The meeting was called to order at 11:45 a.m. by Chaquetta Hill, president-elect. Chaquetta welcomed members and guests to the annual Administrative Professionals’ Day luncheon/meeting. Eighty-five (85) individuals attended the luncheon – 32 members and 53 guests. The following members and were present at the meeting:

GUEST SPEAKER
Cathy Conner, program co-chair, introduced the speaker, Dr. Martha Walker. Dr. Walker’s topic was “Shaping Your Future: Living the Day.” She challenged the audience with the following question: “Do we have the capacity to shape our own future or are we linked to existing conditions and influencers?” She stated the four influencers that shape our future are people, information/knowledge/technology, personal energy, and attitudes. Dr. Walker also shared information from Stephen Covey, author of Principle -Centered Leadership. She discussed principle-centered leader characteristics, essential character traits, and 30 key methods of influence. In closing, she advised the audience to play, laugh, dream and live with your arms wide open.
DRAWING FOR DOOR PRIZES
Dr. Walker was given the honor of drawing winning numbers for door prizes which had been donated by SHRM members. Approximately 15 door prizes were donated by members and given to lucky guests. Following the awarding of door prizes, a 50/50 drawing was held. Veronica Fitzgerald-Terry was the winner of the 50/50 drawing. The balance of the funds will be used to support the SHRM foundation.

The meeting adjourned at 1:20 p.m.
