August Chapter Meeting Notes

     

    SOUTHSIDE VIRGINIA SHRM

    REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING

    Wednesday, August 28, 2019

     

    WELCOME AND CALL TO ORDER

    The Southside Virginia SHRM chapter met for its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, August 28, at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) in the first floor conference room.

    The meeting was called to order at 11:59 a.m. by Angie McAdams, president. The following members and guests were present at the meeting:

    PRESIDENT’S REMARKS

      • The president asked members to observe a moment of silence to remember the Bernard and Bivens family due to the recent homicide.
      • Betty Wilcher will be retiring from her position as Human Resources Manager at the IALR at the end of December. Betty was thanked for her years of service to the chapter.
      • Members were reminded of the upcoming yard/bake sale which will be held on Saturday, October 19. Volunteers are needed to assist with the fundraiser which provides support for scholarships, conference attendance, and certification assistance. Members can drop-off items to Vicki Davis at Barkhouser.
      • Board elections will be conducted at the October meeting. Members are needed to fill board positions. Board membership provides opportunities to learn more about the chapter and make new connections.
      • The Christmas event will be held in December. The president encouraged chapter members to assist the board members in planning the event.
      • George Washington High School Business Department has asked for volunteers from various careers to speak to students or participate in mock interviews during the fall semester. Interested individuals can contact Angie McAdams with dates that you are available.
      • The president recognized the following members who had birthdays during the month of August: Jo Barton, Juliette Jennings, Pam Payne, and Ronnie Pannell.

    GUEST SPEAKER

    Due to sudden illness, Dan Ragland and Robert Waller from the Veterans Office were not able to speak at the meeting. They will be rescheduled to speak on the topic of "Being Intentional In Hiring Veterans and Veterans’ Spouses."

    FIFTY/FIFTY DRAWING

    Betty Edwards was the winner of the 50/50 drawing. She generously donated her winnings to the SHRM scholarship fund.

    ADJOURNMENT

    The meeting adjourned at 12:30 p.m.
