    Dr. Martha Walker

    "Shaping Your Future"

Martha currently serves as one of three community Viability Specialists with Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) and is a faculty member in Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics.  Martha joined Extension in October 2005 after serving for 28 years at Danville Community college as both faculty member and in an administrative role.  She now works with counties and cities throughout Virginia as well as multiple state agencies assessing community needs, facilitating community based action plans, and identifying resources from Virginia Tech, Virginia State University, and other state and federal agencies.

Dr. Walker launched Virginia cooperative Extension’s grassroots leadership program, Innovative Leadership:  Building Community Connections, an 18-hour training focused on building leadership skills and knowledge.  She also co-teaches the Virginia Association of Counties’ County Supervisor Certification program and engages leaders throughout Virginia in facilitated discussions and decision-making processes.  Building on the success of the leadership program, Martha has led the state’s facilitation training and guided hundreds of groups in building consensus and making decisions.

In 2015, Martha received the Virginia Tech Alumni Award of Excellence in Extension (Individual Specialist) in addition to the programming awards she received throughout her career with Extension.

She was an elected member of the Pittsylvania county School Board between 1996 and 2004, is past president of the Danville Pittsylvania Count Chamber of Commerce, and has served on various non-profit boards.

North Carolina born and Virginia bred, Martha makes her home in Ringgold with her husband Carroll.  Carroll and Marth, active member of College Park Baptist, have two grown children and two grandchildren.  Martha has a Bachelor’s degree from Averett College, a Master of Science degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy form Old Dominion University.
