    BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

    Wednesday, January 23, 2019

     

    WELCOME AND CALL TO ORDER

    The Southside Virginia SHRM Board of Directors met on Wednesday, January 23, at Averett University’s Riverview Campus in the first floor conference room.

    The meeting was called to order at 12:12 p.m. by Angie McAdams, president. The president welcomed new board members and each member provided a brief introduction of themselves.  The following members were present at the meeting:

    PRESIDENT’S REPORT

    Upcoming deadlines

    1. The SHAPE (year-end report) is due by January 31.  The president provided a summary of the chapter’s income, expenditures, and assets for the previous year.  Board members also reviewed the progress of the SHAPE report which the president will finalize and submit by the deadline.
    2. The EXCEL report is due by March 15.  The chapter is striving to maintain platinum status.

    State Conference

    The state conference will be held in Norfolk, Virginia, on April 7 -April 10.  Those interested in attending the conference should contact Angie McAdams by Friday, February 1.  Members are encouraged to seek funds from their employers if possible to attend the conference.  However, scholarships may be available on a limited basis. Registration for the conference is on an individual basis and information is available on the HR Virginia website. The theme for the conference is “The Mermaid and the Mariner.”

    Leadership Conference

    Connie Alderson, Chaquetta Hill, Ronnie Pannell, and Angie McAdams attended the Leadership Conference which was held in Staunton, Virginia, on January 10 – 12, 2019.  The chapter received a check for $2600 as a portion of the profits based on chapter membership, program activities, and chapter participation in SHRM events.  The president encouraged other members to consider attending the event next year.

    Regular Board Meeting

    1. New Board Member Inductions – President Adams will make plans for new board members to be formally inducted at the meeting on January 30.  Donna Hankins swore members in at the meeting last year.
    2. Speaker – Hershel Stone, CFP, Financial Advisor will speak to the group regarding types of retirement plans, employee education, and retirement plan distributions.

    PRESIDENT-ELECT’S REPORT

    Chaquetta Hill reported on her experience attending the Leadership Conference.  She indicated that she enjoyed the sessions and opportunities to meet members from other chapters.  The conference provided her with knowledge for the opportunities and challenges that she may experience in her role.

    TREASURERS’ REPORT

    1. Financial Report - Shirley Hodge stated there was no new information to report.  Angie McAdams stated that she has been provided with financial records and the laptop which was used by the previous treasurer and would provide  this information to the co-chairs.   Glenda Holt is new to the board as treasurer co-chair.
    2. On-line Payment Options – Members discussed various online payment options and fees associated with this method of payment.  World Pay was an option that may be feasible based on reported ease of use and low fees.

    SECRETARIES’ REPORT

    Susan Watkins stated that she had taken minutes at the November meeting and would send the minutes to Janice Brink.  The holiday luncheon was held in December so there were no minutes needed for the December meeting.

    MEMBERSHIP REPORT

    Christine Thompson reported that she has received 22 payments of membership dues for 2019.  Seven members have decided not to renew their memberships due to personal or professional obligations.  Members are encouraged to pay membership dues by January 30, 2019.

    PROGRAM REPORT

    Petrina Carter reported that she has been in contact with Joey Faucette as a possible speaker for the February or March meeting.  Board members decided to have the Administrative Professional’s Day conference for April.  Speakers suggested for this event included Julie Brown, Martha Walker, and Christine Barkhouser.

    Speakers suggested for future meetings were Mauricio Velasquez, Patrick Jinks, and Christopher Wilson.  Jill Levinson recommended that public safety could be an interesting topic; Sergeant Tim Scearce (Danville Police Department) and Billy Chaney (Danville Public Schools) could be contacted to speak.  A legal workshop was also discussed as a possible option.  Susan Watkins will look at SHRM speaker’s bureau for speakers at future meetings. 

    CERTIFICATIONS REPORT

    A report was not provided due to the absence Betty Wilcher.

    COMMUNICATION REPORT

    The communication chairs briefed the board on their efforts regarding the chapter Facebook Account.   The co-chairs will meet on Thursday, January 24, to possibly resolve technical issues they have experienced.  The communications committee is also exploring the creation of  a LinkedIn page for SSVASHRM.

    FOUNDATION REPORT

    Vicki Davis reported that the chapter had met the qualifications for the Champion Award.  It was also decided that the chapter would continue the 50/50 drawing at each meeting,  Members discussed various fundraising ideas and conducting a membership drive.

    WORKFORCE READINESS REPORT

    Chad Younger updated the board regarding the training survey he is preparing.  A draft of the survey will be sent for review.

     

    COLLEGE RELATIONS REPORT

    Jill Levinson reported that she has been in contact with college relations personnel at Liberty University regarding their SHRM student chapter for a possible partnership.  SHRM currently has partnerships with Averett and Danville Community College.  The chapter will not pursue a partnership with American National University since the college is no longer enrolling students and is scheduled to close soon.

    PAST PRESIDENT’S REPORT

    Ronnie Pannell expressed his satisfaction with the new board members and felt that the leadership is in “good hands.”
