BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
Wednesday, January 22, 2020
WELCOME AND CALL TO ORDER
The Southside Virginia SHRM Board of Directors met on Wednesday, January 22, at the Virginia Workforce Center in the conference room.
The meeting was called to order at 12:10 p.m. by Chaquetta Hill, president. The following members were present at the meeting:

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Introductions
Following brief introductions of new board members, the president reviewed board member position descriptions and SHRM bylaws. Each board member was also given a copy of A Chapter Leader Resource Guide.
Reports
The president provided information regarding the following reports and their status/deadlines:
- CLIFF Report – submitted by the deadline (December 1)
- SHAPE Report – currently being prepared and will be submitted by January 31
- EXCEL Report – currently being prepared and will be submitted by March 15
Conference Attendance
There were no board members available to attend the Leadership Conference which was held in January.
The state conference will be held at the Omni Homestead Resort April 19 through April 22. Those interested in attending the conference should contact Chaquetta Hill, president.
Regular Chapter Meeting
The president confirmed that Betty Wilcher will be responsible for inductions for the new board members at the chapter meeting in January.
The speaker for the January meeting will be Marsha Mendenhall, CEO of PATHS.
PRESIDENT ELECT’S REPORT
Felisa King reported on her experiences and learning opportunities from her attendance at the Volunteer Leadership Conference in November. She also advised members of the SHRM app and associated features.
TREASURERS’ REPORT
A financial summary of account balances was provided to board members by Shirley Hodge.
SECRETARIES’ REPORT
Board Meeting and Chapter meeting minutes taken by Jan Brink and Richie Robertson were distributed to the board members for review. A motion was made by Shirley Hodge to approve minutes and the motion was seconded by Chad Younger.
MEMBERSHIP REPORT
Lucius Chandler stated the membership renewal applications were emailed in December. The deadline for payment is January 31.
PROGRAM REPORT
Barry Mayo confirmed that Marsha Mendenhall (CE0 of PATHS) would be the speaker for the January meeting. President Hill reminded everyone that speaker information needs to be provided at least 30 days in advance for HRCI approval.

CERTIFICATIONS REPORT
Betty Wilcher is in the process of retiring and the Certification Chair position is currently vacant. Chaquetta Hill will follow up with Betty Wilcher regarding the duties of this position.
Members remarked about the many years of service that Betty had provided to the chapter. Lucius Chandler suggested a plaque be presented to Betty at the January chapter meeting to recognize Betty for her service. Lucius will be responsible for obtaining the plaque.
COMMUNICATION REPORT
Connie Alderson briefed the board on her efforts regarding the chapter Facebook Account. She reported that she is still experiencing difficulties accessing the page and a new Facebook page needs to be created.
FOUNDATION REPORT
Vicki Davis reminded members of the importance of fundraising for SHRM. Members discussed continuing the 50/50 and encouraging members to bring cash to the meetings. President Hill suggested that fundraising efforts be emphasized throughout the year.
WORKFORCE READINESS REPORT
Chad Younger updated the board regarding the training survey that will be resubmitted to employers. Workforce Services is also partnering with Averett regarding various workshops that will benefit area employers. APHR and APR certification classes are scheduled in March/April. An instructor is currently being sought to teach the classes.
COLLEGE RELATIONS REPORT
Carsheena Johnson is brainstorming ideas to increasing college student membership or participation in SHRM.
PAST PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Angie McAdams was not able to attend the meeting.
