January Chapter Meeting Notes
SOUTHSIDE VIRGINIA SHRM
REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING
Wednesday, January 29, 2020
WELCOME AND CALL TO ORDER
The Southside Virginia SHRM chapter met for its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 29, at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) in the first floor conference room.
The meeting was called to order at 12:01 p.m. by Chaquetta Hill, president. The president recognized the following members who had birthdays during the month of January. The following members and guests were present at the meeting:

SWEARING IN OF NEW OFFICERS
The president welcomed new board members and each member provided a brief introduction of themselves. Betty Wilcher swore in the new board members. Betty was also presented with a plaque from the chapter in recognition of her years of service. Betty is in the process of retiring and Elaine Ratcliffe has been hired as HR Director at the IALR.
GUEST SPEAKER
Barry Mayo introduced the guest speaker Marsha Mendenhall, CEO of PATHS. Ms. Mendenhall provided members with the history, purpose, and core values of PATHS. The business employs 190 employees and has a budget of over $20,000,000. There are three pharmacies and five sites for service: Danville, Chatham, Martinsville, South Boston, and Boydton. She emphasized that PATHS is not a free clinic. There is a sliding scale fee for prescriptions and health care based on a patient’s household income and percentage below the poverty level. The Free Clinic donated its building to PATHS to allow for an expansion. Ms. Mendenhall shared her knowledge of the many and varied services pertaining to health care that are offered by PATHS.
STATE CONFERENCE
Members were reminded of the SHRM State Conference which will be held on April 19-22 at the Omni Homestead Resort. Those interested in attending the conference were instructed to contact Chaquetta Hill.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Curtis Artis announced that a job resource fair for returning citizens will be held at the Community Market on April 29 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. This fair is designed to assist those with a criminal history to find employment.
Felisa King announced that she is now self-employed as a business development consultant.
FIFTY/FIFTY DRAWING
Richie Robertson was the winner of the 50/50 drawing. The balance of the funds will be used to support the SHRM foundation.
