BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
Wednesday, June 19, 2019
WELCOME AND CALL TO ORDER
The Southside Virginia SHRM Board of Directors met on Wednesday, June 19, at Averett University’s Riverview Campus in the first floor conference room.
The meeting was called to order at 12:09 p.m. by Chaquetta Hill, president-elect. The following members were present at the meeting:

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Chaquetta Hill provided members with the following updates:
- HR Virginia Third Quarter meeting will be held on July 26 at a Southside Virginia location. Members will be notified with specifics regarding the meeting later.
- The chapter was awarded SHRM Excel Platinum status for 2018; and the State Council also received this designation.
- The National SHRM Conference will be held on June 23-26 in Las Vegas.
- A donation was made to Lucius Chandler in memory of his wife.
PRESIDENT-ELECT’S REPORT
Chaquetta Hill presided over the June meeting due to the absence of Angie McAdams, president.
TREASURERS’ REPORT
Shirley Hodge provided information regarding the savings and checking account balances. Members inquired about the status of online capabilities for payments. Ms. Hodge advised that online options were not available at this time. Venmo was discussed as a possible option for billing and payment.
SECRETARIES’ REPORT
Members were provided with copies of the minutes for the May Board Meeting and the regular monthly meeting. No changes were made to the minutes that were presented. Jill Levinson made a motion to approve the minutes as presented, and Ronnie Pannell seconded the motion.
MEMBERSHIP REPORT
Michele Cole reported that one new member has not paid; however, she will make sure that payment is received. Jill Levinson inquired as to the status of membership for Marcellous Reeves. Michele stated that Marcellous is shown as being a member; however, he needs to respond to the initial email to start receiving correspondence from SHRM regarding meetings.
PROGRAM REPORT
The following individuals were suggested as speakers for future meetings:
- June – Alexis Ehrhardt, Chamber of Commerce
- July – R. J. Lackey, Attorney
- August– Dr. Robert Walker, VEC Chief Veterans Office
- September – Chris Wilson
- October - N/A (Elections for board members)
- November – Dr. Juliette Jennings, Danville Public Schools
Cathy Conner will no longer be able to serve on the board as program co-chair due to her retirement. Members discussed the need to fill the two vacancies for program co-chairs.
CERTIFICATIONS REPORT
Betty Wilcher was not able to attend the meeting.
COMMUNICATION REPORT
Twyla Price reported that she needs help on the Facebook business page. She is unable to make changes due to the password requirement. Member suggested she contact Facebook for assistance in resetting the password. Twyla and Connie Alderson have made updates to the SHRM home page and would like to receive speaker information a month in advance to send information to members in a timely manner.
FOUNDATION REPORT
Vicki Davis informed members that the raffle was no longer a feasible option for the annual fundraiser. The permit for the raffle included a lengthy application process and the cost for the permit would be $200. She also explored the idea of a fundraiser at a restaurant; however, the chapter would only be allowed to retain 20 percent of sales. Board members discussed other options including a yard/garage sale. Vicki will investigate this option and provide more details at the next meeting.
WORKFORCE READINESS REPORT
Chad Younger reported that Danville Community Collee will be offering safety classes for industry. SHRM certification prep classes are also possibilities for fall offerings. The SHRM certification courses didn’t have enough enrollment to be offered previously. Some members felt that the courses were cost prohibitive for employers. Ronnie Pannell stated that scholarships may be available to some members to take the courses. He reminded board members of the requirement that more than 50 percent of members need to be SHRM certified.
COLLEGE RELATIONS REPORT
Jill Levinson didn’t have any updates to report.
PAST PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Ronnie Pannell discussed the Grand Fundraiser from SHRM National. He explained that this is an appeal to encourage members to donate to the foundation.
