BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
Wednesday, May 22, 2019
WELCOME AND CALL TO ORDER
The Southside Virginia SHRM Board of Directors met on Wednesday, May 22, at Averett University’s Riverview Campus in the first floor conference room.
The meeting was called to order at 12:09 p.m. by Angie McAdams, president. The following members were present at the meeting:

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Administrative Professionals’ Day Debriefing
The president and board members discussed the Administrative Professionals’ Day event which was held on April 24. All members were impressed with the number and variety of vendors who were at the event. Members shared comments from attendees that the speaker was excellent, the event was worth attending, and it was fun. The following areas for improvement were suggested:
- Advertise a cut-off date for registration
- Increase the number of door prizes
- Establish a time for attendees to visit with vendors – a vendor time of 11-11:30 was suggested.
- Create a survey for vendors to determine their success and if they would be willing to participate again
Condolence Donation
The president and members discussed making a charitable donation in the memory of Lucius Chandler’s wife, Delisha Chandler. Angie will contact Lucius regarding his wishes for the donation.
PRESIDENT-ELECT’S REPORT
Chaquetta Hill was not able to attend the meeting.
TREASURERS’ REPORT
Shirley Hodge provided a financial report of the savings and checking account balances for the month of April.
SECRETARIES’ REPORT
Members were provided with copies of the minutes for the April Board Meeting and the regular monthly meeting. No changes were made to the minutes that were presented.
MEMBERSHIP REPORT
Lucius Chandler and Michele Sims-Cole were not able to attend the meeting.
PROGRAM REPORT
Speakers: Joe Martin, Crime Prevention Officer with the Danville Police Department, will be the speaker at the May meeting. He will speak on the topic of “Violence in the Workplace.”
The following individuals were suggested as speakers for future meetings:
- June – a representative from the Chamber of Commerce.
- July – Cath Conner will contact R. J. Lackey
- August – Dr. Robert Walker, VEC Chief Veterans Office
- September – Angie McAdams will contact Chris Wilson
- October – no speaker needed due to elections
- November - Dr. Juliette Jennings
CERTIFICATIONS REPORT
Betty Wilcher was not able to attend the meeting
COMMUNICATION REPORT
Connie Alderson reported that there were no updates to the chapter’s Facebook account and other social media.
FOUNDATION REPORT
Vicki Davis provided an idea for a raffle as the yearly fundraiser. Members discussed various options for the raffle as to whether it should be advertised as a 50/50 or specific dollar amount for the prize. Vicki has contacted Piedmont Printing and Graphics and received a quote of $87 for printing costs for 50 books of 10 tickets. This would result in $2500 if all tickets are sold. Incentives were also discussed to encourage members to sell tickets. Vicki will contact the City of Danville to determine if a permit is required for the raffle.
WORKFORCE READINESS REPORT
Chad Younger did not have any updates regarding the responses received from the employer survey that was sent to members
COLLEGE RELATIONS REPORT
Jill Levinson requested an update regarding the student membership approved at the April meeting for Marcellous Reeves. Angie McAdams will follow-up with Lucius Chandler regarding the status of the membership.
PAST PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Ronnie Pannell did not have any updates to report.
