February 2020 Board Meeting

     

    SOUTHSIDE VIRGINIA SHRM

    BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

    Wednesday, February 19, 2020

     

    WELCOME AND CALL TO ORDER

    The Southside Virginia SHRM Board of Directors met on Wednesday, February 19, at the Virginia Workforce Center in the conference room.

    The meeting was called to order at 12:04 p.m. by Chaquetta Hill, president.  The following members were present at the meeting:

    PRESIDENT’S REPORT

    Board Position Descriptions and Bylaws

    The president asked if any board members had questions about their board position description or the SHRM bylaws. Each board member was given a copy of A Chapter Leader Resource Guide, board position description, and SHRM by laws at the January meeting. No board members had questions about their duties or the SHRM bylaws.

    Reports

    The president stated that the EXCEL Report is currently being prepared and will be submitted by March 15.

    Conference Attendance

    The state conference will be held at the Omni Homestead Resort April 19 through April 22.  The president plans to attend the conference and Felisa King, president-elect, has also expressed interest in attending. Those interested in attending the conference should contact Chaquetta Hill, president. Board members also discussed the availability of scholarship funds to attend the conference.  President Hill will check with Ronnie Pannell and Angie McAdams to see how scholarship funds have been used in the past for conference attendance.

    Regular Chapter Meeting

    The speaker for the February meeting will be Brad Hartman, and he will speak on the topic of Injury Prevention in the Workplace. The event for this month was approved for SHRM certification credit.

    CHAPPS (Chatham High School After Prom Parents) Request for Donation

    A request from Chatham High School to provide a donation to their CHAPPS event was discussed and declined by board members.

    Employment Law Seminar

    The Blue Ridge SHRM chapter is sponsoring an Employment Law Seminar at Patrick Henry Community College on Wednesday, March 11.  The cost to attend is $15.  Jan Brink suggested a carpool for those interested in attending.  Registration information was provided in an email which was sent to all members.

    PRESIDENT ELECT’S REPORT

    Felisa King was not present at the board meeting.

    TREASURERS’ REPORT

    A financial summary of account balances was provided to board members by Twyla Price.

    SECRETARIES’ REPORT

    January Board Meeting and Chapter meeting minutes were distributed to the board members for review.   A motion was made by Janice Brink to approve minutes and the motion was seconded by Chaquetta Hill.

    MEMBERSHIP REPORT

    Lucius Chandler reported that there were 26 chapter members and payment had been received for 17 members.  The chapter also has 5 new members.

    PROGRAM REPORT

    Barry Mayo confirmed that Brad Hartman, president of BLC, would be the speaker for the February meeting.  President Hill reminded everyone that speaker information needs to be provided at least 30 days in advance for HRCI approval. Barry and Vivian will meet with Betty Wilcher to discuss the process for HRCI approval.

    Planning for the Administrative Professionals’ Day luncheon in April was also discussed.    Items discussed included determination of the profitability of the event as well as how funds will be accepted for registration.  Additional discussion for the event will continue at the March board meeting.

    Raymond James – Retirement Planning for Your Employees

    Legal Updates – TBD

    October – Board Elections for 2021

    November - Veterans Program – Rob Walker (Lucius Chandler has confirmed this speaker)

    December – Christmas Party

    COMMUNICATION REPORT

    Twyla Price reported that a LinkedIn page will be created for the chapter since the difficulties in accessing the Facebook page haven’t been resolved. Twyla and Connie will be developing the LinkedIn page and requests that pictures of SHRM events be sent to Twyla.

    FOUNDATION REPORT

    Vicki Davis reminded members of the importance of fundraising for SHRM.  Members discussed continuing the 50/50 and encouraging members to bring cash to the meetings.  President Hill suggested that fundraising efforts be emphasized throughout the year.  Fundraising ideas discussed included selling Pepsi products and candy bars and having another yard/bake sale.

    WORKFORCE READINESS REPORT

    Chad Younger didn’t have any updates to report regarding Workforce Services. 

    COLLEGE RELATIONS REPORT

    Carsheena Johnson is brainstorming ideas to increasing college student membership or participation in SHRM. Carsheena plans to meet with faculty at Danville Community College and Averett University regarding student membership.

    PAST PRESIDENT’S REPORT

    Angie McAdams was not able to attend the meeting.

    The meeting adjourned at 12:48 p.m.
